Bowling Green Daily News - Justice Abramson Speaks at Bowling Green Law Day
Recognizing those who work in the legal field is an important matter, considering the vital roles they play in helping maintain society in an orderly manner.
At Tuesday's Law Day ceremony at the Warren County Courthouse, the focus was on how the rule of law has shaped life in the United States and on honoring several people in the legal community.
Lawyers, judges and others in the legal field mold our society. They protect those who need protecting, put criminals in prison so they don't threaten society and help settle a range of domestic and civil suits on a daily basis.
Recognizing these contributions is what Law Day is all about.
Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Lisabeth Hughes Abramson spoke at the event and made a good point about the importance of the legal system.
"No matter what problems there are in this country, the rule of law is what ensures that atrocities that occur in other nations will not happen here," Abramson said.
Law Day was also a day to present awards to distinguished lawyers for their service.
Attorney John Lucas was the posthumous recipient of the William H. Natcher Award. This is the highest honor bestowed by the Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Association.
"Jim Lucas was a man who simply did it right," according to Charles English, Lucas' former law partner.
Lawyer Cindi Crocker was presented the Gwyneth Davis Outstanding Public Service Award. Crocker was the primary organizer of the People's Law School - an effort by the bar association to make complex legal issues more understandable to the public.
Finally, Murry Raines was presented the annual Pro-Bono Publico Award, which was given to an attorney who volunteers to represent the underprivileged.
Congratulations to all the winners of these awards. We are sure that they were very deserving of them because of their hard work and dedication to their profession.
Many schoolchildren, who were at the event, were also recognized for their essay writing and poster contest efforts.
It is important to focus once a year on how all of us benefit from the rule of law and to recognize those who make the justice system perform effectively.
